Moscow, September 27 (Xinhua) — The General Assembly of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has fully reinstated the Russian Paralympic Committee (RPC) as a member of the International Paralympic Committee. This was announced in a statement published on the RPC's official website.
According to the RPC, the vote took place on September 26 in Seoul, the capital of the Republic of Korea, in two stages. During the first stage, 111 delegates voted against completely suspending the RPC's membership in the IPC, with 55 delegates supporting the proposal. During the second stage, 91 delegates voted for the full reinstatement of the RPC's membership, with 77 delegates voting against.
"Russian Paralympians will participate with the flag and anthem of the Russian Federation and other national attributes in the Paralympic Games and competitions in sports for which the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) functions as the international federation. These include athletics, swimming, powerlifting, sledge hockey, and shooting," the RPC announced on Saturday.
The RPC is reported to welcome the fact that the majority of General Assembly delegates voted in favor of a fair decision. The IPC acknowledged that the RPC is conscientiously fulfilling its membership obligations as set forth in the IPC Statutes.
“This is an important contribution to the development of the international Paralympic movement and an example of how the rights of athletes must be protected without discrimination based on nationality and political affiliation,” the RPC statement stated. –0–
