St. Petersburg, September 26 (Xinhua) – Nineteen people died after drinking alcohol in the Slantsy District of Russia's Leningrad Region in September, the regional government press service reported on Friday.
Laboratory tests confirmed methanol as the cause of death in eight cases. Preliminary data indicate that the mass poisoning was caused by unauthorized private alcohol production and sale.
Those suspected of selling a dangerous alcoholic beverage have been detained. Law enforcement is investigating the circumstances of the incident.
