Victoria, September 26 (Xinhua) — More than 77,000 voters in the Seychelles began voting on Thursday. The election, which will last until Saturday, will elect the president and members of the National Assembly.
The island nation consists of 115 islands. Voting began on Thursday for residents of the outer islands and essential workers, and polling stations on the three main islands are scheduled to open on Saturday.
Eight candidates are vying for the presidency, including incumbent President Wavel Ramkalawan of the Seychelles Democratic Alliance (SDA). His main challenger is Patrick Herminie of the country's largest opposition party, United Seychelles.
According to the Constitution of the Republic, the presidential term is five years. The candidate who receives more than half of the votes in the first round is declared the winner. If no candidate receives the required majority, the two leading candidates advance to a second round of voting.
At the same time, elections will be held for members of the National Assembly. This is a unicameral legislative body consisting of 35 members elected for five-year terms. Twenty-six members are elected directly from constituencies, and nine are elected by proportional representation.
