WASHINGTON, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) — U.S. President Donald Trump said Thursday he will not allow Israel to annex the West Bank, a "red line" for Arab leaders as they try to reach a ceasefire agreement in Gaza.
"I will not allow Israel to annex the West Bank. I will not allow it. It will not happen," Trump told reporters at the White House. "Enough is enough. It's time to stop," the president added, announcing that he had spoken with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Trump promised Arab and Muslim leaders he would not allow annexation during a closed-door meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly on Tuesday. This is the key promise in the Trump administration's 21-point plan to end the conflict between Israel and Hamas and establish a governing body for Gaza independent of Hamas, Politico reports.
The new plan was developed in response to increasing international pressure on Israel amid the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The meeting was attended by leaders and senior officials from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, Indonesia, and Pakistan.
