TAIYUAN, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) — The 9th Pingyao International Film Festival opened Wednesday evening in the ancient town of Pingyao, north China's Shanxi Province. The event will feature 53 films from 25 countries and regions, including China, Nigeria, Iraq, Norway, Japan, Iran, Brazil, Singapore, and Bulgaria.
All of these films will be screened for the first time on the Chinese mainland. More than half of them will have their Asian premieres at this year's festival, while 30 percent of the participating films will have their world premieres.
The film festival, under the motto “Meeting Point,” runs until September 30, focusing on identifying and promoting outstanding work by young filmmakers, particularly from developing and emerging countries.
The Pingyao International Film Festival, founded in 2017, is held annually in the ancient Chinese town of Pingyao, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The festival aims to expand and intensify exchanges between filmmakers from around the world to promote the flourishing of the global film industry.
Over the past nine years, the film festival has attracted a total of more than 5,000 filmmakers and 450 works from over 50 countries and regions around the world, as well as 2 million tourists from home and abroad.
