Tehran, September 25 (Xinhua) — Iran and Russia signed a memorandum of understanding on Wednesday in Moscow on the construction of small modular reactors (SMRs) in the Islamic Republic, the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) announced on its website.

The document was signed by the head of the AEOI, Mohammad Eslami, and the general director of Rosatom, Alexey Likhachev.

The memorandum aims to expand cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy to promote sustainable development, strengthen energy security, and advance technology in accordance with the national regulations and international obligations of the two countries.

According to the memorandum, Iran and Russia will prepare and sign contracts for the design and construction of nuclear power plants based on SMRs in the future.
