GUIYANG, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) — The Huajiang Gorge Bridge in southwest China's Guizhou Province, which is expected to be the world's tallest, will open to traffic on Sept. 28, the local government announced.
The height from the bottom of the gorge to the bridge deck is 625 meters, the bridge is 2,890 meters long, and the main span reaches 1,420 meters. The new structure will not only be the highest bridge in the world, but also the bridge with the longest span in a mountainous area, the provincial government announced.
Construction of the record-breaking bridge took over three years. During construction, numerous technological breakthroughs in wind resistance and high-rise construction were achieved. These technological advances have been incorporated into national standards, according to Zhang Yin, Director of the Guizhou Provincial Bureau of Transportation.
According to data, Guizhou Province has over 32,000 bridges built or under construction, three of which are the tallest in the world. About half of the top 100 tallest bridges in the world are located in this province.
