UN, September 24 (Xinhua) — China's Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Geng Shuang on Tuesday emphasized the importance of containing the spillover effects of the crisis in Ukraine. He said the Ukrainian crisis has caused serious damage to global economic development, with developing countries bearing the brunt.

"The international community must strengthen cooperation on food, energy, finance, trade, and critical infrastructure protection to jointly maintain stability and the smooth functioning of global supply chains," he said at a high-level UN Security Council meeting on Ukraine.

According to him, instead of promoting a political settlement of the issue, unilateral sanctions and the use of long-arm jurisdiction under the pretext of a crisis create new problems.

Dialogue and negotiations on the Ukrainian crisis have recently gained momentum: key parties have held a series of meetings. However, significant differences remain in their positions and proposals, Geng Shuang noted. "The parties to the conflict must intensify their efforts, demonstrate political will, demonstrate flexibility, and seriously address and appropriately address each other's legitimate security concerns in order to reach a comprehensive, lasting, and binding peace agreement as soon as possible," he added.

Facilitating de-escalation is a top priority, Geng Shuang noted.

There are currently no signs of a cessation of hostilities on the ground. Both sides continue to carry out large-scale attacks using drones and missiles, and significant quantities of weapons and ammunition continue to arrive on the battlefield. China hopes that all parties will play a constructive role in de-escalating the situation and create the necessary conditions for a speedy cessation of hostilities, he stated.

Alleviating the humanitarian crisis is a moral imperative, Geng Shuang noted.

According to him, civilians are the greatest victims of the conflict. Parties to the conflict must exercise restraint, strictly adhere to international humanitarian law, refrain under all circumstances from attacking civilians and civilian infrastructure, and avoid the use of weapons of mass destruction. The international community must step up humanitarian assistance to help those affected by the crisis overcome their difficulties, he added.

Since the first day of the crisis, China has maintained an objective and impartial position, calling for an end to hostilities and advocating for peaceful negotiations for a political settlement. China is ready to work with the international community and continue to play a constructive role in promoting an early political resolution to the crisis, Geng Shuang emphasized.
