GUANGZHOU, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) — Schools, production and commercial activities, and public transportation were suspended in some parts of south China's Guangdong Province on Wednesday as Typhoon Ragasa approached.

According to the Zhanjiang City Flood, Drought and Typhoon Relief Headquarters, all classes at schools were cancelled as a precautionary measure at around 3:00 pm on Tuesday, and production and commercial activities, as well as public transportation, in Zhanjiang will also be suspended from 3:00 pm on Wednesday.

Local authorities noted that services responsible for water supply, electricity, gas, communications, medical care and emergency situations will continue to operate, calling for the suspension of all other activities that could pose a threat to safety or endanger people.

Typhoon Ragasa, the 18th typhoon of the year, entered the South China Sea late Monday evening. At 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, it was located approximately 170 km southeast of Yangjiang City. It is forecast to move northwest at 20 km/h and make landfall Wednesday evening in the coastal strip between Yangjiang and Zhanjiang.

China's National Meteorological Center (NMC) on Wednesday maintained the "orange" weather alert level, the second-highest in China's four-level weather warning system, as the typhoon is expected to bring heavy rain and wind.
