Guiyang, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) — The first international Ironman triathlon competition took place on Sunday near the world's highest bridge, which spans the Huajiang Gorge in southwest China's Guizhou Province.
More than 200 athletes from 20 countries and regions, including Russia, the USA, and France, took part in the competition.
Yegor Repin, a 26-year-old Russian who has been pursuing a master's degree in China since 2023, tried his hand at an Ironman triathlon for the first time.
He noted that the support of local residents and the unique natural landscapes of Guizhou Province inspired him during the competition. "Such beauty fills people with passion!"
For E. Repin, the allure of triathlon extends beyond the sport itself. He particularly praised the friends he made from all over the world during the competition.
"The athletes are full of enthusiasm. This atmosphere of unity, which helped bring everyone together, is a major reason for my participation in these competitions," the young man noted.
According to him, exchanges between Russia and China are becoming deeper and closer, and such sporting events are the embodiment of the friendship between the peoples of the two countries.
As a reminder, the bridge is located at the junction of Guanling-Buyi Miao Autonomous County in Anshun City and Zhenfeng County in Qianxinan-Buyi Miao Autonomous Prefecture. It is also a key project within the Liuzhi-Anlong Expressway.
Construction of the Huajiang Gorge Bridge began in January 2022. It is expected to open to traffic in the second half of 2025, reducing the time it takes to cross the canyon by car from over two hours to approximately one minute.
The design height of the aforementioned bridge from the bottom of the gorge to the bridge deck is 625 meters. The total length of this steel suspension bridge is 2,890 meters, and the length of the main span is 1,420 meters. After completion of all construction work, it will become not only the highest in the world, but also the bridge with the longest span in the world built in a mountainous area. -0-
