BEIJING, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) — Zhao Leji, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), met with a U.S. congressional delegation led by Congressman Adam Smith in Beijing on Tuesday.
Zhao Leji said that maintaining the healthy, stable and sustainable development of China-US relations is the common aspiration of the people of both countries and the whole world.
Mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation are the fundamental principles for the development of Sino-US relations, he said.
Calling on both sides to adhere to the principles of reasonableness, objectivity and fairness, Zhao Leji expressed the hope that both sides would strengthen exchanges, seek common ground while maintaining differences, strengthen mutual trust and eliminate doubts, so as to bring greater stability to bilateral cooperation and the world economy.
Zhao Leji noted that the Taiwan question is the most important and sensitive issue in China-US relations, and called on the US side to sincerely adhere to the one-China principle and handle the Taiwan question prudently.
Zhao Leji added that the Chinese National People's Congress is willing to strengthen exchanges with the US Congress to play a constructive role in developing China-US relations. He also welcomed the visit of a large number of members of the US Congress to China.
