BEIJING, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) — Chinese authorities on Tuesday sent about 60,000 emergency relief items to Guangdong Province in the south of the country as Typhoon Ragasa approaches.
Emergency supplies, including tents, folding beds, summer blankets, emergency lights and family kits, have been allocated to support local authorities' efforts to ensure the safe evacuation, relocation and accommodation of affected residents, as well as to provide disaster relief and recovery, according to the Ministry of Emergency Management (MEM).
These funds were jointly allocated by the Office of the National Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Commission, the Ministry of Emergency Situations, and the State Food and Material Reserves Administration of the People's Republic of China.
China's National Flood and Drought Control Headquarters on the same day raised the typhoon emergency response level to level three for Guangdong and Hainan provinces (South China) as Typhoon Ragasa, the 18th typhoon this year, approached the country's coast.
According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, a powerful typhoon is expected to make landfall in the coastal strip between the cities of Zhuhai and Zhanjiang between midday and late evening on Wednesday. The storm will bring heavy rain to parts of Guangdong Province and other coastal provinces.
