BEIJING, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) — China is pushing forward with comprehensive education reform to better meet the needs of students and the country's socio-economic development, Education Minister Huai Jinpeng said on Tuesday.
He said the country is adjusting the distribution of educational resources, moving away from a sole focus on higher education admissions by intensifying the development of county-level secondary schools and advancing reforms in high school and college entrance examinations.
In higher education, China is also exploring ways to diversify student development pathways. For example, under the "Outstanding Engineer Program," graduate students can use innovative achievements such as patents, product development, and software development to apply for degrees, said Huai Jinpeng.
This is a historic breakthrough towards reforming the system in which academic degrees are awarded solely on the basis of dissertations, he added.
China is also pushing ahead with reforms to match the supply of talented professionals with demand, Huai Jinpeng noted, emphasizing that the country currently publishes an annual list of critically needed specialized skills to meet socio-economic development needs. -0-
