Washington, September 23 (Xinhua) — The United States has banned Iranian diplomats attending the UN General Assembly in New York from shopping at large retailers like Costco and purchasing luxury goods, the State Department announced on Monday.

"This week, the United States took action to exert maximum pressure on the Iranian regime by restricting its UNGA delegation's travel and access to luxury retail outlets and luxury goods," the department said in a statement.

As noted, the Iranian delegation can only visit areas strictly necessary for travel between the UN headquarters and their place of residence.

The State Department said diplomats' membership in club-type stores, as well as the ability to purchase items such as watches, furs, jewelry, handbags, wallets, perfumes, tobacco, alcohol and cars, are "benefits" that require U.S. government approval.

A public notice scheduled to be published in the Federal Register on Tuesday says Iranian diplomats and their dependents need State Department approval to “obtain or otherwise maintain membership in any club-type wholesale store in the United States, including, but not limited to, Costco, Sam's Club, or BJ's Wholesale Club, or to purchase merchandise from such club-type wholesale stores by any means.”

In addition, Iranian diplomats in the United States also need to obtain permission to purchase goods worth more than $1,000 and vehicles worth more than $60,000, local media reported.

The Donald Trump administration previously imposed visa restrictions on foreign diplomats planning to participate in UN work. Representatives of UN member states, including approximately 150 heads of state and government, are currently in New York to participate in the High-Level Week of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly. According to the Associated Press, Iran is the only country whose diplomats have been subject to special restrictions.
