Lanzhou, September 23 (Xinhua) — A meeting marking the 10th anniversary of the Belt and Road University Alliance was held in Dunhuang, northwest China's Gansu Province, on Monday. Experts and scholars from more than 20 countries, including China, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Pakistan, held in-depth discussions on strengthening cooperation in higher education, science, technology, and other fields.

It should be recalled that in 2015, Lanzhou University, located in Lanzhou, Gansu Province, together with universities from countries participating in the Belt and Road Initiative, initiated the creation of the aforementioned alliance in Dunhuang with the aim of jointly forming a higher education community.

Lanzhou University Party Committee Secretary Ma Xiaojie said that over the past ten years, the alliance's "circle of friends" has steadily expanded, and now includes 197 universities from 27 countries and regions.

"With the support of the alliance, we have trained a large number of specialists for the joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative and conducted in-depth joint research in such important areas as agricultural science and technology, environmental management, and meteorological services," Ma Xiaojie added.

Over 2,000 years ago, the Great Silk Road built a bridge of friendly exchanges between East and West. With the dawn of a new era, the Belt and Road Initiative has once again created a platform for promoting dialogue and cooperation between countries around the world.

Zhao Lei, Deputy Director of the Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges at the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, noted that educational exchanges and cooperation are an important part of the joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative, expressing hope that the Belt and Road University Alliance can continue to play a role as a platform and link, and promote higher-quality and sustainable educational exchanges and cooperation.

In recent years, cooperation between Chinese universities and those in Belt and Road Initiative countries has steadily deepened. The construction of cooperation platforms such as the China-Russia Institute of Fundamental Research and the China-Malaysia Graduate Institute of International Studies is progressing steadily. Higher education cooperation within the multilateral frameworks of China-Central Asia, China-ASEAN, and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) has also yielded positive results.

Experts present at yesterday's meeting expressed the view that China and countries participating in the Belt and Road Initiative have achieved impressive results in advancing cooperation in higher education and strengthening scientific research exchanges. They hope that in the future, more targeted methods for cultivating top-notch specialists will emerge to ensure the human resources necessary for the socio-economic development of countries participating in the Belt and Road initiative.
