SHENZHEN, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) — Twenty-one members of an organized crime group operating in northern Myanmar have gone on trial in southern China on charges of fraud, intentional murder, intentional causing of bodily harm, kidnapping, extortion, opening and operating casinos, organizing and forcing prostitution, illegal detention, smuggling and drug production.
The Intermediate People's Court of Shenzhen City, Guangdong Province, South China, held a trial in the case from September 19 to 22.
The Shenzhen People's Procuratorate has indicted members of an organized crime group led by Bay Saw Chain and Bay Yin Chin, accusing them of using the Bay family's influence in Myanmar's Kokang region to build 41 complexes of various types and provide armed protection to people conducting illegal business there since August 2009.
The organized crime group was accused of conspiring with individuals it protected to commit crimes including telecommunications fraud, intentional murder, intentional injury, kidnapping, extortion, opening and operating casinos, organizing illegal border crossings, and organizing and forcing prostitution, resulting in the deaths of six Chinese citizens and injuries to many others. According to prosecutors, the proceeds from gambling and fraud exceeded 20 billion yuan (approximately $2.8 billion).
Bay Yin Chin also conspired with others to smuggle and manufacture approximately 11 tons of methamphetamine, the charges say.
