BEIJING, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) — On the eve of China's 8th Farmers' Harvest Festival, General Secretary Xi Jinping, on behalf of the CPC Central Committee, congratulated and extended sincere greetings to the country's farmers and comrades engaged in agricultural, rural, and peasant work.
Xi Jinping, who is also the President of the People's Republic of China and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, stressed the need to make efforts to create beautiful and harmonious countryside suitable for living and working, as well as to jointly advance towards a bright future of Chinese modernization.
Xi Jinping said the country has overcome the impact of natural disasters such as drought and floods and achieved a stable summer grain harvest along with an increase in early rice yield this year, giving hope for another bumper harvest.
Advancing China's modernization is impossible without modernizing agriculture and rural areas, he noted.
Xi Jinping emphasized the need to prioritize the development of agriculture and rural areas, improve policies aimed at strengthening the agricultural sector, improving the well-being of rural residents and increasing their incomes, support the development of agricultural science, technology and equipment for the agricultural sector, and focus on increasing the comprehensive production capacity of agriculture in the country.
He called for a range of measures to stimulate employment and increase farmers' incomes, as well as to steadily promote the comprehensive development of rural areas.
The Chinese Farmers' Harvest Festival is the first national holiday established specifically for Chinese farmers. The festival, first celebrated in China in 2018, coincides with the autumnal equinox—one of the 24 seasons of the traditional agricultural calendar, which occurs between September 22 and 24 during the country's agricultural harvest season.
