BEIJING, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) — Eight decades ago, the United Nations was born from the ashes of World War II, opening a new chapter in humanity's collective quest for peace, security, and development. Now, as world leaders gather in New York to mark its 80th anniversary, the central question is clear: how to build a more effective and inclusive system of global governance.
The stakes have never been higher. The revival of Cold War mentalities, hegemonism, and protectionism are undermining mutual trust, fueling geopolitical tensions, and exacerbating deficits in peace, development, and governance. Meanwhile, developing countries remain underrepresented in global decision-making, and the authority and effectiveness of the UN are under increasing pressure.
Today, the world needs more, not less, multilateralism. Strengthening the central role of the UN and upholding the principles of the UN Charter are the best ways to fulfill its fundamental mission. Against this backdrop, China has launched the Global Governance Initiative, offering a timely and concrete path forward.
The initiative is based on five core principles: adherence to sovereign equality, respect for the rule of international law, implementation of multilateralism, upholding a people-first approach, and focusing on action. Fully aligned with the UN Charter, these principles provide a foundation for making global governance more equitable, inclusive, and effective. The Global Governance Initiative is essentially another global public good that China offers to the world.
Its relevance is underscored by the crises of our time. From conflicts and famine in Gaza, the worsening climate crisis in the Arctic, to the destructive potential of artificial intelligence, today's problems are closely interconnected and require collaborative solutions. Without real action, the desire to improve governance remains empty talk.
This year's UN General Assembly theme, "Working Together: 80 Years of Working Together for Peace, Development, and Human Rights, and the Way Forward," reflects the urgency of the moment. Revitalizing multilateral cooperation is the only way forward, and the Global Governance Initiative offers a practical plan to guide these efforts.
At this crucial juncture, the world must reaffirm the UN's founding values of solidarity and cooperation. By joining the Global Governance Initiative and pursuing consultation, shared contribution, and common benefit, humanity can create a system of governance capable of ensuring lasting peace, security, and shared prosperity for all.
