Damascus, September 22 (Xinhua) — Syria's People's Assembly (parliament) elections have been set for October 5, the country's Supreme Committee for Parliamentary Elections announced on Sunday. These will be the first parliamentary elections since the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad's government last year.
It is noted that the decision was made in accordance with the constitutional declaration and decrees issued earlier this year by interim leader Ahmed al-Sharaa, who created the Supreme Electoral Committee in June. Elections will be held under a temporary indirect electoral system designed to form a new legislative body within 60-90 days.
In August, elections in As-Suwayda, Hasakeh and Raqqa were postponed due to security concerns.
The seats allocated to these provinces will remain vacant until “suitable conditions and a safe environment are created,” the committee said.
Sweida is experiencing sectarian clashes, while Hasakah and Raqqa continue to face instability as a result of tensions between the interim authorities and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces. –0–
