KABUL, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) — Afghan officials have sharply rejected US threats to retake Bagram Air Base, stressing that any attempt to restore a foreign military presence will face decisive resistance.
In response to US calls to return the strategic airfield to its control, Tajmir Jawad, deputy head of Afghanistan's General Intelligence Directorate (GID), stated that the Afghan government will maintain the existing system.
Confirming this determination, Afghan Defense Minister Mohammad Yaqub Mujahid told the media: “Our answer is this: if you do not leave and want to get the bases, we are ready to fight you for another 20 years.”
The director of the political department of the Afghan Foreign Ministry, Zakir Jalali, rejected the idea of returning American troops, saying that Afghans “have never accepted foreign troops on their territory” and that any dialogue with Washington must rule out a re-military occupation.
Bagram Air Base, located about 50 kilometers north of Kabul, served as the epicenter of US and NATO operations during two decades of war. –0–
