HARBIN, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) — China on Thursday established a special foundation to preserve and manage the remains of the former headquarters of Unit 731, a special unit of the Imperial Japanese Army that secretly conducted biological weapons research in northeast China during World War II.
The fund, established by the China Cultural Heritage Foundation, aims to support research into the history of Unit 731 and its criminal atrocities, and to protect the site where the unit's base was located.
Located in the Pingfang district of Harbin City (the capital of Heilongjiang Province, Northeast China), the complex served as a base for Japan's planning and implementation of biological warfare in China.
Historical records indicate that Unit 731 used at least 3,000 people for human experiments between 1940 and 1945, while more than 300,000 people in China were killed by Japanese biological weapons.
"Protecting and studying this site, which provides crucial evidence of Japanese militarists' biological warfare, is not only a matter of preserving history but also a responsibility of the era to uphold justice for humanity," noted Liu Yuzhu, Chairman of the China Cultural Heritage Foundation. He stated that the foundation will focus on preserving the base's remains, digitally archiving relics, promoting international academic exchanges, and educating the younger generation.
This year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the victory in the World Anti-Fascist War.
On Thursday, the film "731" (Evil Unbound), which chronicles the atrocities of Unit 731, officially opened in Chinese cinemas. According to Chinese ticketing platform Maoyan, the film's box office receipts for the day had exceeded 280 million yuan by 7:00 PM on Thursday. -0-
