SHANGHAI, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) — A batch of export cargo, which will be transported by rail and road, recently departed Shanghai for Kyrgyzstan for the first time, Shanghai Customs officials said Thursday.
According to customs, a 40-foot container loaded with industrial raw materials departed from Shanghai Railway Station on September 16. The goods will first be transported by rail to Kashgar (Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, northwest China), then transferred to road transport and, leaving the country through the Torugart border crossing (Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region), will be transported to Kyrgyzstan.
As a reminder, in September 2024, the General Administration of Customs of the People's Republic of China issued a notice approving the pilot implementation of a multimodal freight transport model (rail plus road). Compared to previous years, exporting companies will now only need to submit a single customs declaration.
The multimodal freight transport model is expected to fully utilize the advantages of long-distance rail transport and the high capacity and flexibility of road transport. Compared to traditional freight transport models, this could reduce logistics costs by approximately 30 percent and open a new logistics channel for export companies in Shanghai and the surrounding region focused on expanding foreign trade to Central Asia.
