In 2016, the Lu Ban Workshop, established by the Tianjin Bohai Vocational and Technical College, was officially opened in Thailand. This was the first Lu Ban Workshop established by China abroad. To date, China has built over 30 such workshops in 30 countries across Asia, Africa, and Europe.
Named after the distinguished ancient Chinese master Lu Ban, this international cooperation project shares the experience and achievements of Chinese vocational education with people around the world. It is a valuable attempt to elevate domestic vocational education to a global level.
According to Lu Shanbin, director of the Institute of Silk Road Studies at Northwest University, Lu Ban's Workshops bring changes to local communities in three main ways:
Firstly, they train technical specialists for local markets, promoting effective employment. Thanks to a training model based on "design, practice, innovation, and project implementation," the workshops have produced a large number of qualified personnel for local development.
Secondly, they facilitate the introduction and application of modern technologies, raising local technical standards. Many developing countries dream of having high-speed railways in their own countries. However, implementing Chinese technologies on the High-Speed Railway requires a significant number of specialists. After the opening of the Lu Ban Workshops, cutting-edge equipment, such as Chinese high-speed train simulators and robots, was introduced to enable local students to learn control technologies and operating procedures.
Third, they promote humanities exchanges and rapprochement between the peoples of China and other countries. Through cultural events and interaction with local students, the Lu Ban Workshops deepen mutual understanding and cultural exchange, fostering friendly ties between peoples.
