After a year of intensive expansion, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area has become one of the regions with the highest runway density in the world. The formation of a "world-class airport cluster" has accelerated.

On July 30th of this year, a test flight on the fifth runway of Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport was successfully completed. This will be the second airport in China and the first in the Greater Bay Area with five runways.

On August 3, calibration of the third runway at Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport was completed, paving the way for its commissioning by the end of the year. The three-runway system at Hong Kong International Airport was officially launched in November 2024.

In addition to airports in Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Hong Kong, other airports in the Greater Bay Area are also advancing with renovation and expansion work.

In May 2024, the apron at Huizhou Airport officially opened after reconstruction and expansion, increasing the number of parking spaces from 8 to 14. In November 2024, land reclamation work began for the expansion of Macao International Airport. In December 2024, the new terminal at Foshan Airport opened for business.

Wang Guowen, Director of the Institute of Logistics and Supply Chain Management at the China (Shenzhen) Institute of Comprehensive Development, noted that the expansion of the airport cluster will not only transform the Greater Bay Area into an air logistics hub connecting China with the outside world, but will also reduce logistics costs for enterprises in the region, promoting free movement and efficient distribution of economic factors.

It also stimulates the development of airport area economies and promotes the transformation of the Greater Bay Area from a "world factory" into a "world market" for high-quality economic development.
