COLOMBO, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) — Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said on Tuesday that China's resumption of highway construction in Sri Lanka demonstrates the close ties and cooperation between the two countries and the steady development of bilateral relations.

He thanked China for its assistance during the economic crisis in Sri Lanka.

A.K. Dissanayake was speaking at the resumption ceremony of construction of Section 1 of the Central Expressway from Kadawatha to Mirigama, being carried out by Metallurgical Corporation of China Limited (MCC).

The President noted that this project is an important national priority for Sri Lanka. He thanked China for its support in improving the country's economy and raising living standards. The resumption of the project demonstrates Sri Lanka's efforts to overcome economic difficulties and move toward sustainable development, he added.

According to Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Qi Zhenhong, the Central Expressway project is of crucial significance to Sri Lanka's recovery and revival and is a new milestone in the friendship between the two peoples.
