Specialists from the Rosneft Research Institute in Tomsk have discovered well-preserved traces of marine fauna from the Jurassic period in rock: ray-finned fish, parts of a sea lily, and the skeleton of a brittle star, a distant relative of the starfish.

Such finds in cores (rock samples studied to search for, estimate reserves and extract oil) are more often found in the form of small fragments or individual flakes. The discovery of large remains – parts of the skeleton and skin – is a unique event.

Thus, while studying rock samples extracted from an exploratory well in the Surgut region of the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug, Tomsk geologists found imprints of a ray-finned fish with clear outlines of three fins.

According to Rosneft specialists and paleontologists from Tomsk State University who studied the fossil, the find belongs to the extinct family Peipiaosteidae, early representatives of the order Acipenseridae, and the shelf deposits surrounding the fish date back to the late Oxfordian (Late Jurassic period), covering a time period from 158 to 154.8 million years ago.

Such traces of ancient organic matter allow scientists to more accurately identify disparate fragments of flora and fauna, establish their connections with the environment, and determine conditions favorable for the formation and accumulation of oil.

The Tomsk scientific institute of Rosneft has collected more than 160 kilometers of physical rock samples, selected for research from several thousand wells of Russian oil and gas fields. A detailed study of the conditions of formation of oil deposits is provided by its own scientific and analytical center, using more than 600 units of classical and newest equipment, including unique micro- and mesotomographs, designed to create high-precision "digital twins" of the core structure.
