BRASILIA, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) — Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was sentenced on Thursday to 27 years and three months in prison for allegedly attempting a coup.

Four of the five judges of Brazil's Federal Supreme Court voted to convict the former president. Judges Alexandre de Morais and Flavio Dino found Bolsonaro guilty of the charges brought against him on Tuesday. Judges Carmen Lucia and Cristiano Zanin supported the decision on Thursday, while Luis Fuchs called for the politician's acquittal on Wednesday.

J. Bolsonaro was found guilty on all five counts: attempted coup d'état and violent undermining of the democratic rule of law, participation in an armed criminal organization, damage to property and destruction of cultural heritage.

The country's Federal Supreme Court began hearing the case on September 2. A majority vote of the five-judge panel hearing the case is needed to convict. –0–
