The International Sports Games of the Holy Blessed Prince Alexander Nevsky and the International Forum "Faith and Sport" have opened in St. Petersburg. They will run until September 15.
Sports Minister Mikhail Degtyarev read out a greeting from Russian President Vladimir Putin, in which the head of state, in particular, noted: "These large-scale competitions, dedicated to the memory of Prince Alexander Nevsky – an outstanding statesman, commander, a true patriot, introduce young men and women to traditional moral ideals and values, and serve to promote a healthy, active lifestyle in society. And of course, such significant, popular projects strengthen the connection between times and generations, and testify to the sincere, growing interest of young people in their native history, in our roots and origins."
The head of state expressed confidence that the Games, which are being held on the initiative of the Patriarchal Commission for Physical Culture and Sports, will become a major and truly festive event and will be remembered for a long time for their special, inspiring atmosphere.
In his greeting, Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus' emphasized that this year the competition, which has received international status, is being held in St. Petersburg – “a city where the relics of St. Alexander Nevsky are reverently kept and where representatives of different cultures have peacefully coexisted for more than three centuries.”
Deputy Prime Minister, Chairman of the Organizing Committee for the Preparation and Holding of the International Sports Games of the Holy Blessed Prince Alexander Nevsky Dmitry Chernyshenko also sent greetings to the organizers, participants and guests of the Games and the forum. He emphasized the symbolism of holding the first international games in St. Petersburg – a city that has been building a dialogue between representatives of different countries for centuries.
“Prince Alexander, who united the Russian lands and peoples, who became the personification of our spiritual, state, military and diplomatic aspirations, became by right the patron of a significant initiative of the Russian Orthodox Church and traditional religions of Russia in the field of physical culture and sports, aimed at the spiritual, moral and patriotic education of the younger generation,” the Deputy Prime Minister noted.
He added that the approach to organizing and holding sporting events that combines spiritual growth and physical improvement will become Russia’s invaluable contribution to the development of world sport.
The International Forum “Faith and Sport”, which is part of the Games, will become a vibrant discussion platform for discussing a wide range of issues.

It is gratifying to realize that the proposed format of combining sports competitions and spiritual and moral growth finds a practical response from our friends from Belarus, Egypt, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Myanmar, Tajikistan and other countries. I wish all participants, guests and organizers of the international games sports victories and success in the upcoming competitions!" the Deputy Prime Minister concluded.
Governor of St. Petersburg Alexander Beglov wished the participants to believe in themselves, respect their opponents and added: “I am sure that you have all already won, because you are at these Games, you are in St. Petersburg!”
The sports program of the Games includes competitions in five sports (basketball, sambo, mini-football, chess, table tennis), and the fulfillment of the standards for testing the All-Russian physical culture and sports complex "Ready for Labor and Defense".
The Games will include the international forum “Faith and Sport” – a discussion platform for experts to exchange experiences and develop solutions aimed at interaction between religious organizations of traditional faiths in Russia and executive authorities, organizations and institutions in the field of physical culture and sport.
The organizers of the Games in 2025 are the Ministry of Sports, the Patriarchal Commission for Physical Culture and Sports, and the Government of St. Petersburg. The composition of the organizing committee has been approved.
