MADRID, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) — Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Monday announced a series of measures against Israel in a televised address from his official residence at the Moncloa Palace.

P. Sanchez outlined nine steps his government will take, confirming that the cabinet will approve a decree on Tuesday to impose an arms embargo on Israel.

In addition to the embargo, Spain will close its airspace and ports to planes carrying weapons to Israel or ships carrying fuel for the Israeli military. The country will also ban products coming from illegal Israeli settlements and increase funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

While acknowledging that these steps “will not be enough,” P. Sanchez said they were aimed at increasing pressure on Israel and “alleviating some of the suffering of the Palestinian people.”

Israel resumed its military operations in the Gaza Strip on March 18. At least 11,911 Palestinians have been killed and 50,735 wounded since Israel resumed intensive strikes, Gaza health authorities said Sunday, bringing the death toll since October 2023 to 64,455 and the number of wounded to 162,776. –0–
