TUNIS, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) — Tunisia hopes to strengthen cooperation with China in the automobile industry, Tunisian Minister of Industry, Mines and Energy Fatma Thabet Chiboub said on Monday.

The minister made the statement at the opening ceremony of a Chinese auto parts plant in the Ben Arous province in northern Tunisia.

Tunisia and China have successfully cooperated in various sectors such as education, health and infrastructure, the minister said, noting that the auto parts plant represents a new step in strengthening industrial cooperation between the two countries.

Stressing that auto parts production is one of Tunisia's key industries, with annual production accounting for around 4 percent of the country's GDP, the minister said Tunisia welcomes further investment from Chinese companies.

The newly opened auto parts factory is operated by China's Changchun Jetty Automotive Technology Co., Ltd. The company is expected to produce 5,000 sets of automotive wiring harnesses daily by the end of this year, focusing on serving Chinese and European automakers.

Wang Chao, CEO of Jetty, said the new plant will strengthen local auto parts manufacturing capabilities and improve efficiency through the introduction of highly automated production lines and lean manufacturing practices. –0–
