HAIKOU, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) — Authorities in southern China's Hainan island province activated a Level 4 emergency response mechanism at 8 a.m. Sunday as Typhoon Tapa, the 16th typhoon of the year, formed and approached.
According to the Hainan Provincial Meteorological Service, Typhoon Tapa was raging in the South China Sea at 07:00, 445 km southeast of Dianbai District, Maoming City, Guangdong Province, in southern China. The maximum wind speed near its epicenter reached 9 points /23 m/s/.
The typhoon, continuing to gain strength, will move northwest at a speed of 10 to 15 km/h, forecasters say. The storm is expected to hit the coast of Zhuhai and Zhanjiang in Guangdong Province between Monday morning and midday.
On Sunday afternoon, the typhoon will bring easterly winds of force 5 and even 7-8 to the waters of the Qiongzhou Strait and Beibuwan Bay. The wind force in the waters to the east of Hainan Island will increase to 7-9 and even 10-11, and in the waters of Xisha and Zhongsha Islands – to 6-8 and even 8-10.
