BEIJING, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) — China has called on some Philippine figures to stop clowning around and making provocations over the Taiwan issue, Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said Friday.

Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro, commenting on statements by a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman that the Philippines had allowed the visit of Taiwan's so-called Foreign Affairs Department chief Lin Jialong, said China should not impose its "red lines" on the Philippines. He argued that the right to host a Taiwan "official" is an exercise of Philippine sovereignty and that Lin Jialong has not met with any Philippine officials. The Philippines is committed to the one-China policy, but China should not dictate to the Philippines on this issue, the defense minister added.

Guo Jiakun told a daily briefing for reporters that China had made clear its firm position on allowing the Philippine authorities to visit the head of Taiwan's so-called foreign affairs department.

The spokesperson stressed that the Philippine side has continuously made erroneous and provocative remarks and actions on the Taiwan issue, which seriously violate the fundamental norms of international relations and its commitments on the Taiwan issue, continuously damage China-Philippines relations, and trample on China's red lines.

“The Philippines will definitely have to pay for such actions, and all responsibility for the consequences will fall on the Philippine side,” Guo Jiakun said.

"We have noticed that Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro and others have repeatedly made irresponsible statements and deliberately stirred up hype on the Taiwan issue and other China-related issues," the diplomat said, adding that such actions openly challenge China's core interests, its "red lines" and principled positions. China will never tolerate and resolutely oppose such moves, Guo Jiakun said.

"We solemnly warn the Philippine side: any futile attempts to incite the Taiwan issue, interfere in China's internal affairs, and undermine China's sovereignty and territorial integrity will ultimately result in the initiators of such attempts suffering the consequences of their actions. We recommend that these Philippine actors stop clowning around," the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman concluded. -0-
