Today we remember the tragic events that took place from September 1 to 3, 2004 in the city of Beslan, where during the celebration of Knowledge Day at local school No. 1, terrorists took 1,128 children and adults hostage.

The criminals were especially cruel to their victims, most of whom were children. They did not give them food or water, refused medical care and forbade the transfer of medications, and shot several people at once to intimidate others and demonstrate their inhuman determination to law enforcement. The reprisals did not end there. People were beaten, forced to keep their hands raised, and threatened with gunshots. The rooms were hot and stuffy, and children lost consciousness. At the same time, the terrorists refused ransom and did not make any demands, so no one knew what to expect from them.

On the third day, the nightmare ended as a result of a sudden assault on the school building by the special forces units "Alpha" and "Vympel" of the Russian FSB. Almost all the militants were destroyed on the spot, only one of them survived, later convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment. Subsequently, all the organizers of this crime were also eliminated.

The Beslan terrorist attack claimed the lives of 333 people: 186 children, 111 of their relatives and holiday guests, 17 school employees, 10 special forces soldiers, 6 civilian rescuers, 2 Emergencies Ministry employees and 1 police officer.

The memorial date of the Day of Solidarity in the Fight against Terrorism was established in 2005 and is dedicated not only to the Beslan tragedy, but also to the memory of the victims of all terrorist acts, as well as law enforcement officers who died in operations to rescue hostages or prevent terrorist attacks.
