TEHRAN, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) — The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) plays a positive role in ensuring the continuity of the international order based on multilateralism and the rule of law, a senior Iranian diplomat said Saturday.

The SCO is “very influential and effective in the sense that it can represent the interests and concerns of countries in the Global South,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei told Xinhua in an exclusive interview ahead of the SCO summit scheduled from Sunday to Monday in the northern Chinese city of Tianjin.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is in China to attend the summit and events marking the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.

According to E. Baghaei, Iran will take advantage of “this opportunity /the president’s visit to China/ to strengthen bilateral relations with China and hold meetings with other leaders of participating countries.”

The Iranian diplomat noted that the world is currently facing common challenges arising from “unilateral actions and coercive measures that some Western countries, particularly the United States, are using against developing countries.”

He added that the SCO could play a very important role in providing an effective platform for cooperation among countries of the Global South, safeguarding the interests of developing countries and ensuring the continuity of the international order based on multilateralism, the rule of law and “normative structures emanating from the UN Charter.”

Speaking about the relations between Iran and China, Baghaei emphasized the common historical ties between the two countries in the fields of culture and civilization, adding that the two sides continue to develop and deepen their ties, with mutual understanding and trust steadily growing. The two countries have signed many agreements in areas such as trade, economy, energy, agriculture and tourism.

According to him, the foundation of bilateral relations is very strong, and both countries are determined to continue developing them in the same spirit. –0–
