TEHRAN, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) — Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Sunday said the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in north China's Tianjin is a "historic" opportunity to promote multilateralism, expand economic and cultural cooperation, and strengthen peace and security in the region and the world.

As indicated on the website of the Iranian President's Office, M. Pezeshkian made this statement before flying from the Iranian capital Tehran to China to participate in the summit, which will be held from August 31 to September 1.

Describing the visit as “very important,” Pezeshkian noted that the SCO provides a unique platform for expanding regional and international cooperation. He stressed that Iran’s participation reflects the country’s commitment to strengthening multilateralism in the face of unilateralism and totalitarianism, which some Western blocs adhere to.

The Iranian president said he would meet with leaders and senior officials of SCO member states during his visit, expressing hope that talks with them would contribute to peace and security in the region and the rest of the world. –0–
