WINDHOEK, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) — Fourteen people were killed in a head-on collision on the B1 highway in Namibia's Hardap region, about 270 km south of the capital Windhoek, early Saturday morning, police said.

Hardapa Deputy Commissioner of Police and Head of Crime Investigation John Mwatonghela said the accident involved a police van and a Namibian Correctional Services Service van.

He said the police van had six passengers, including five officers and one civilian, and the other van had 13. The crash left 11 correctional officers, one police officer and two civilians dead, and three others seriously injured.

In a statement, Namibian President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah expressed “deep sorrow” over the tragedy, saying “her heart goes out to the families who have lost their loved ones, as well as to the men and women of the Namibian Correctional Service and the Namibian Police who are mourning their colleagues.”

She also prayed for the recovery of the three seriously wounded. –0–
