GAZA, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) — At least 57 Palestinians were killed in Israeli strikes on the Gaza Strip on Saturday, Palestinian Civil Defense spokesman in Gaza Mahmoud Bazal told Xinhua.
Meanwhile, the Israeli military said in a statement that it had struck a "key Hamas terrorist in the Gaza City area," without providing further details about the target or the specific location of the strike.
The new Israeli attacks came a day after the Israeli army announced the start of "preliminary operations and initial stages" of an assault on Gaza City, saying its forces were operating "with great intensity" on the outskirts of the city.
Since October 7, 2023, the Israeli military campaign in Gaza has killed 63,371 people and injured 159,835, the health authority based in the Palestinian enclave said on Saturday, adding that hunger and malnutrition in Gaza have led to the deaths of 332 people, including 124 children.
On Friday, Israeli state television Kan TV reported that Israel would halt its airdrops of humanitarian aid over Gaza City in the coming days and would also ban aid trucks from entering northern Gaza. –0–
