TEHRAN, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) — The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said on Wednesday that its forces killed 13 "terrorists" in three joint operations in the southeastern province of Sistan and Baluchestan.

The IRGC said in a statement carried by the official Sepah News that the ground forces, in cooperation with the country's intelligence units, carried out joint counter-terrorism operations early Wednesday morning. Some "terrorists" were also detained in the operation. However, the statement did not specify the number of those detained.

Detailing the operation in Iranshahr district, police spokesman Saeed Montazerolmahdi said security forces had killed eight militants who were involved in Friday's attack on police patrols in the same district. Five policemen were killed in the attack, the semi-official Tasnim news agency reported.

He added that a significant amount of weapons and ammunition had been seized from “terrorists” in Iranshahr. Tasnim reported that some of the confiscated weapons and ammunition had been stolen by “terrorists” during a deadly attack on police patrol units.

The Sistan and Baluchestan province, bordering Pakistan and Afghanistan, has seen constant clashes between Iranian security forces, militants from the Baluch minority and drug traffickers. –0–
