Rhesus sensitization can develop in a woman with a negative Rh factor if she is carrying an Rh-positive child. This can lead to anemia in the baby and pose a serious risk to its health and even life. The disease in which maternal antibodies destroy the baby's red blood cells in the womb is called hemolytic disease of the fetus.
