Specialists from the perinatal center of the City Clinical Hospital (CCH) No. 31 named after Academician G. M. Savelyeva helped a pregnant woman with a rare disease. The patient's immune system perceived the fetus's red blood cells as foreign and destroyed them, which could lead to serious complications.

Doctors gave the child five blood transfusions while he was still in the womb to replenish his blood supply. Under the supervision of doctors, the woman was able to carry the baby to 37 weeks, resulting in the birth of a healthy girl. This was reported by Anastasia Rakova, Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Social Development.

"The powerful infrastructure framework of the capital's medicine and the latest equipment allow us not only to diagnose fetal pathologies at an early stage, but also to apply unique methods of intrauterine treatment. For example, specialists of the City Clinical Hospital No. 31 named after Academician G.M. Savelyeva have extensive experience in managing pregnant women with such a rare immune disease as Rh sensitization. This is a condition in which a woman's immune system perceives the baby's blood cells as foreign and fights them, which can lead to serious complications. Thanks to the clear routing and professionalism of the medical team, a healthy baby was recently born, whose mother was faced with this diagnosis. The woman was monitored throughout her pregnancy by doctors who specialize in such cases. For medical reasons, an intrauterine blood transfusion was required. Specialists performed five such procedures and extended the expectant mother's pregnancy to 37 weeks. The woman gave birth to a healthy girl, and now they are at home with their family," the deputy mayor said.

Rhesus sensitization can develop in a woman with a negative Rh factor if she is carrying an Rh-positive child. This occurs when the barrier between the bloodstreams of the mother and fetus is broken, for example during childbirth, miscarriage or its threat, as well as during injuries, some operations and other circumstances. To prevent the disease, women with a negative Rh factor are necessarily administered anti-Rhesus immunoglobulin. The procedure is carried out at 28 weeks of pregnancy, as well as after childbirth if the newborn is confirmed to have a positive Rh factor or in any other events that can lead to Rhesus sensitization.

If no prevention is taken, the next time the fetus's red blood cells enter the mother's bloodstream, her immune system will perceive them as foreign and begin producing antibodies to destroy them. This can lead to anemia in the baby and pose a serious risk to its health and even life. The disease in which maternal antibodies destroy the baby's red blood cells in the womb is called hemolytic disease of the fetus.

The Perinatal Center of City Clinical Hospital No. 31 named after Academician G. M. Savelyeva is one of the leading medical institutions in Moscow in the field of obstetrics, gynecology and neonatology. More than 300 qualified employees provide high-quality care to pregnant women and women in labor, as well as newborn children.

The center provides specialized treatment to pregnant patients with a high risk of complications and pathologies that require intrauterine correction. Doctors also help women with Rh sensitization and hemolytic disease of the fetus and make every effort to ensure safe delivery and maintain the health of the baby.

In addition, the center's employees are proficient in modern methods of childbirth, including vertical birth and soft cesarean section. Here, up-to-date methods of anesthesia are also used during childbirth and surgical interventions – during the consultation, doctors select the most suitable and safe type of anesthesia for the mother and child. And the intensive care and neonatal pathology departments are equipped with modern high-tech medical equipment.

The perinatal center operates in a single complex with the women's health center. The institutions are located on the same territory and are connected by a closed warm passage. This ensures continuity of medical care, increases the efficiency of patient routing and, if necessary, promptly hospitalizes and provides the highest quality treatment.
