Pyongyang, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) — Pyongyang has condemned the "Ulchi Freedom Shield" joint military exercises between the United States and the Republic of Korea (ROK) as a move that "undermines regional security."
Large-scale military exercises targeting the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) can never be "defensive" because they are carried out by the world's largest nuclear-armed state and its "satellite states" on the Korean Peninsula, First Vice Chief of the General Staff of the Korean People's Army (KPA) Kim Yong Bok said in a statement carried by the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on Tuesday.
“The current joint military exercises are preparations for a real war, which makes their provocative nature even more obvious, as they have surpassed all previous exercises held in preparation for a war against the DPRK in their nature, scale and format,” the statement released on Monday said.
Noting that the exercises had become multinational and the number and duration of field maneuvers had reached record levels, the statement said they had “evolved into the largest, longest and worst military exercises” in the Asia-Pacific region, as well as the world.
The DPRK is closely monitoring what is happening and is ready to cope with any situation.
The latest statement follows similar condemnations earlier this month from North Korean Defense Minister No Gwang-chol and a spokesman for the KPA General Staff. –0–
