Bishkek, August 25 /Xinhua/ — The principles of the "Shanghai spirit" are fully reflected in China's global initiatives, Mars Sariev, a political scientist from Kyrgyzstan and an expert on Central Asian issues, told Xinhua.

M. Sariev stated that the “Shanghai spirit” is the ideological and value foundation of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), based on mutual trust, mutual benefit, equality, respect for cultural diversity and the desire for joint development. “These principles are fully reflected in China’s global initiatives – the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative and the Global Civilization Initiative,” he noted.

As the political scientist emphasized, the essential unity of the above initiatives with the “Shanghai spirit” lies in the desire to create a fair and sustainable world order. “China’s initiatives focus on sustainable development, peaceful coexistence, respect for cultures and sovereignty, which echoes the SCO approaches,” M. Sariev said.

In addition, the Kyrgyz expert continued, the SCO has become one of the international organizations providing a real platform for strengthening the role of the Global South. This is especially important in the context of a multipolar world, where developing countries seek to defend their interests without submitting to the dictates of global centers of power, he added.

According to M. Sariev, Kyrgyzstan receives access to dialogue with various powers on an equal basis within the SCO. “This is what makes the SCO unique as an institution of horizontal cooperation,” he noted.

M. Sariev believes that the expansion of the SCO by including the countries of the Global South demonstrates that the organization is becoming the voice of these countries on the world stage. “This changes the configuration of the global architecture – from unipolar to more balanced, in which the countries of the Global South are not only participants, but also initiators,” the expert noted.

According to him, in recent years, the SCO countries have achieved great results in cooperation in the fields of cinematography, television and publishing. “Cultural and media cooperation among the SCO countries in cinematography, television and literature opens up new horizons for humanitarian diplomacy and “soft power”, and also promotes cultural exchange and strengthens mutual understanding between peoples,” the expert said, adding that cultural exchanges form the basis for long-term trust and sustainable interaction, and also contribute to the education of new generations in the spirit of respect for diversity, historical heritage and cultural achievements of other countries.

The SCO summit will be held in the Chinese city of Tianjin from August 31 to September 1 this year. M. Sariev shared his expectations of the upcoming event.

According to the expert, cooperation is expected to intensify in several key areas, in particular, strengthening coordination on regional security issues, including the fight against terrorism, extremism and transnational crime, promoting environmental and digital initiatives, expanding the humanitarian dimension in the areas of education, healthcare and digital culture. –0–
