BEIJING, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) — China has called on the United States to stop trying to damage China-Latin America cooperation by sowing discord, Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said Monday.

The Chinese diplomat made the statement at a regular departmental press conference, commenting on a report that a US military official said China was penetrating the Western Hemisphere and appropriating resources.

"Such accusations from the US are nothing more than outdated language divorced from reality, which once again demonstrates the ingrained Cold War mentality and confrontational attitude of certain individuals in the United States," Guo Jiakun said.

For a long time, China has always adhered to the principles of mutual respect, equality, mutual benefit, openness, inclusiveness and win-win cooperation in carrying out practical cooperation with Latin American and Caribbean countries in various fields, Guo Jiakun added.

Cooperation between China and Latin America meets the needs of each side and serves the common interests of both sides, and actively promotes local economic and social development, winning the sincere approval of countries and people in the region, Guo Jiakun said.

"For many years, the United States has spared no effort to interfere in and control the affairs of Latin America and the Caribbean. The actions of this country's hegemony and bullying are very obvious," Guo Jiakun said.

"Latin America and the Caribbean are not anyone's backyard," Guo Jiakun said, adding that China-Latin America cooperation is not directed against any third party and should not be influenced by any third party. Countries in the region have the right to independently choose their development paths and partners, he stressed.

“The US should stop its attempts to sow discord and create a scandal out of nothing, and instead focus on making pragmatic contributions to the development of Latin American and Caribbean countries,” Guo Jiakun concluded. -0-
