TIANJIN, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) — "People come first," "Emerald waters and green mountains are priceless treasures," "Building a community with a shared future for mankind"… When speaking about the profound concepts and ideas of China's governance, Ekaterina Khvan from Kazakhstan has deep feelings, and her words convey a profound understanding of their essence and wisdom.
This girl with oriental charm is a doctoral student in the Chinese-Russian translation department of the Translation Research Center for Major Party and Government Documents at Tianjin Foreign Studies University. She mainly works on translation from Chinese into Kazakh and Russian. Since last year, she has been systematically engaged in translating important Chinese documents.
Ekaterina Khvan pulled out several books from the bookshelf that she was proud of. They had titles printed in Kazakh and Chinese: “A Brief History of the Communist Party of China,” “Chinese Modernization,” and several important agreements and statements on cooperation between China and Kazakhstan.
“Some chapters and theoretical sections in the Kazakh version are my work. Through translation, I want to show the world and explain Chinese wisdom that advances the development of human civilization,” Ekaterina Khvan says proudly. The process of translating important documents has allowed her to gain a deeper understanding of China’s development concepts.
While translating many speeches by Chinese leaders, the word “people” was deeply imprinted in her mind. “Especially when translating the chapters on poverty alleviation, I was deeply moved by this great feat. ‘Not a single person should be left behind on the path to a prosperous life’ is the CPC’s solemn promise to the people. This helped me realize that in both government and personal development, it is necessary to always adhere to the principle of ‘people first’. This concept also deeply influenced my worldview and values,” Ekaterina Khvan shared.
Another example is China's development concept of "Emerald waters and green mountains are priceless treasures", which has allowed her to experience China's wisdom in balancing environmental protection and economic development.
"Kazakhstan has rich natural resources, and an important task for us is to protect the ecology and environment during their development. The Chinese experience shows that environmental protection and economic development do not contradict each other, but mutually stimulate each other," Ekaterina Khvan shared her thoughts.
Another example is the grand vision of “Building a Community with a Shared Future for Humanity,” which has allowed her to take a fresh look at the model of international cooperation proposed by China.
“This vision goes beyond traditional thinking in international relations; it is inclusive and forward-looking, pointing the direction for the development of human society,” said Ekaterina Khvan.
Kazakhstan is an important participant and beneficiary of the Belt and Road Initiative. Through translation work, she understood the importance of this initiative in promoting regional development and improving the well-being of the people.
“By participating in the translation of important Chinese documents, I not only learn about the wisdom of China’s development, but also find useful lessons for the development of Kazakhstan,” explains Ekaterina Khvan. “This is not just a transformation of the language, but also a testimony of history, the spread of hope.”

She added that this work also carries an important mission of deepening mutual understanding between the peoples of the two countries and promoting mutual enrichment of civilizations. “My translation work provides intellectual and cultural support for deepening the development of relations between China and Kazakhstan. In addition to fluency in both languages, it is necessary to have a deep understanding of the history and culture, political systems, development concepts and aspirations of the peoples of the two countries in order to be a worthy disseminator of China-Kazakhstan friendship, a driving force for bilateral cooperation and a mediator of civilizational dialogue,” she said.
Therefore, when presenting Chinese concepts, Ekaterina Khvan draws attention to finding common points in the two cultures to help the Kazakh people understand them. For example, in the Kazakh language there is an expression “each nation has its own beauty”, which echoes the Chinese concept “each beauty is unique”. The Chinese concept of “harmonious coexistence while maintaining originality” /”he er bu tong”/ has common features with the Kazakh concept of “unity in diversity”.
When translating, Ekaterina Khvan appropriately adds specific examples so that the people of Kazakhstan can more clearly understand the practical meaning of Chinese concepts. “Chinese concepts have deep theoretical content. When translating, I convey their content, moving from simple to complex, from concrete to abstract, gradually going deeper,” said Ekaterina Khvan.
Currently, the Translation Research Center for Major Party and Government Documents at Tianjin Foreign Studies University covers four language areas: English, Japanese, Russian and Korean. The translation team has more than 30 members, including many foreign translators such as Ekaterina Khwang, who directly serve national strategies such as the global expression of Chinese discourse and the construction of an external communication system.
Over the years, the university has successively undertaken or participated in the translation of more than 50 works, totaling over 6 million characters, including major party and government documents such as “A Brief History of the Chinese Communist Party” and “How the Chinese Communist Party Changed China.” Many of the translated books have attracted widespread attention from overseas political circles, academic circles and the general public.
Tianjin International Studies University President Li Yingying said that Chinese initiatives, Chinese wisdom and Chinese variants from here in different languages cross oceans, conveying wisdom and strength to the world.
“Translation is not just a transformation of language, it is a bridge of cultures, a connection of ideas and a communication of hearts,” she said. “Every translation and every choice of word affects the mutual understanding between two peoples.”
In August, Tianjin entered “SCO time.” As a scholar from Kazakhstan studying and living in Tianjin, Ekaterina Khvan is proud of it.
Ekaterina Khvan said that thanks to the translations, she personally felt the dynamic development of Chinese-Kazakh cooperation within the SCO. At the political level, close contacts at a high level are maintained between the two countries, and political trust is constantly deepening. In the trade and economic sphere, bilateral trade is steadily expanding, and new investment cooperation projects are emerging. In the cultural sphere, educational exchanges, media cooperation, and tourist exchanges are becoming more frequent. In the scientific and technical sphere, cooperation in such areas as cosmonautics, new energy, and information technology is yielding fruitful results…
"My homeland and China are connected by common mountains and rivers. Even in ancient times, during the Silk Road, our peoples established deep historical ties and friendly traditions.
