DAMASCUS, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) — Militants of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group carried out a suicide attack on a checkpoint in the eastern Syrian city of Mayadeen on Friday, Syrian state media reported.

According to the state news agency SANA, two attackers approached the checkpoint. Security forces shot dead one of them while the other detonated an explosive device.

The statement did not provide information on casualties among security personnel or civilians, and details of the incident remain limited.

Although ISIS lost control of its last stronghold in Syria several years ago, its underground fighters continue to carry out raiding attacks, especially in the desert areas of Deir ez-Zor governorate in eastern Syria. –0–
