ROME, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) — More than half a million people in Gaza are living in catastrophic conditions marked by hunger and avoidable deaths, according to a report released Friday by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), a United Nations-backed food security monitoring mechanism.

The assessment, conducted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the World Food Programme (WFP) and the World Health Organization (WHO), said that famine in Gaza City is currently spreading south towards Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis. By the end of September, more than 640,000 people are projected to be facing catastrophic food insecurity, with another 1.14 million in emergency conditions and nearly 400,000 in crisis conditions.

The report said thresholds for extreme food insecurity, acute malnutrition and famine-related mortality had been exceeded, allowing for the formal declaration of famine in the Middle East for the first time since the IPC was established. –0–
