BERLIN, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) — A Ukrainian citizen identified as Sergei K. has been detained in Italy for his alleged involvement in the sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipelines in September 2022, the German Prosecutor General's Office said on Thursday.

According to the department's statement, the arrest was made last night in the Italian province of Rimini on the basis of a warrant issued by the Federal Supreme Court of Germany.

The man is suspected of coordinating the operation and participating in a group that allegedly planted explosive devices on pipelines.

According to the warrant, the suspect and his accomplices transported the explosives aboard a sailing yacht sailing out of the German city of Rostock. The vessel was leased from a German company using intermediaries and forged documents.

The explosions occurred on September 26, 2022, causing serious damage to the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea.

The suspect faces charges including complicity in organising explosions and unconstitutional sabotage. He is expected to be extradited from Italy to Germany, where he will appear before an investigating judge at the Federal Supreme Court, the statement said.
