LHASA, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) — Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday called on southwest China's Xijiang Autonomous Region to build a modernized socialist new Xijiang that is united, prosperous, civilized, harmonious and beautiful.
Xi Jinping, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the call after hearing work reports from the Xizang Party Committee and the people's government.
He stressed that Xizang should persistently promote high-quality development and continue to make every effort to fulfill the four major tasks of ensuring stability, promoting development, protecting the environment and strengthening the border.
Xi Jinping noted that since the founding of Xizang Autonomous Region 60 years ago, its socio-economic development has made remarkable progress, attracting the attention of the world, resulting in dramatic changes in the snow-covered mountainous region.
To govern Xizang and ensure its stability and prosperity, it is first necessary to maintain political stability, social stability, ethnic cohesion and religious harmony in the region, Xi Jinping said, calling for advancing the building of a community of the Chinese nation.
The Chinese president stressed the need to promote bilateral exchanges between Xizang and the Chinese mainland in areas such as economy, culture and personnel exchanges, and guide the adaptation of Lamaism to socialist society.
He noted that in Xizang, it is necessary to develop competitive types of industry with highland specifics, taking into account local conditions, paying special attention to specialized sectors of agriculture and livestock breeding, as well as the clean energy sector.
Xi said Xijiang should actively, orderly and effectively push forward the implementation of major projects such as the Yarlung Tsangpo Lower Reach Hydropower Project and the Sichuan-Xijiang Railway Project. He also called on the region to strengthen the construction of an ecological civilization and make coordinated efforts to reduce carbon emissions, reduce pollution, expand green development and achieve economic growth to safeguard the "roof of the world" and the "water tower of Asia."
Xi also stressed the importance of consistently following the CPC's leadership in work related to Xijiang.
The meeting was attended by senior members of the country's leadership, such as Wang Huning and Cai Qi.
Xi Jinping arrived in Lhasa, the capital of Xijiang, on Wednesday at the head of a central government delegation to attend events to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of Xijiang Autonomous Region. The Chinese president will attend a ceremonial gathering in Lhasa on August 21. –0–
