TOKYO, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) — A fire broke out on board a U.S. Navy ship off the coast of a U.S. military port in Uruma, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, on Wednesday evening, local media reported.
According to public broadcaster NHK, the Japan Coast Guard received a call at around 5 p.m. local time about a fire on the USS New Orleans, a 200-meter-long landing craft dock.
The ship's crew reportedly fought the fire and requested support from Japanese authorities.
The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force sent ships to help put out the fire, and the Coast Guard sent patrol boats to the scene.
Smoke was reportedly rising from the bow of the vessel. There are no reports of casualties, and no requests have been made to evacuate American sailors. –0–
