Yerevan, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) — Armenia and Iran are committed to further developing and deepening good-neighborly relations, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who was on an official visit to Yerevan, said following talks on Tuesday, which resulted in important agreements being reached and a number of documents being signed.
According to the press service of the head of the Armenian government, N. Pashinyan, welcoming M. Pezeshkian, noted that the visit of the Iranian President testifies to the high level of relations between the two countries. In turn, the Iranian President stated that the discussions were very constructive and expressed hope that the agreements reached would be implemented by both sides.
The interlocutors also discussed a number of pressing issues of Armenian-Iranian cooperation, paying attention to the further development and expansion of ties in a number of areas. An exchange of views took place on other issues of mutual interest.
Following the meeting, the Prime Minister of Armenia and the President of Iran made a statement to the press. N. Pashinyan, in particular, noted that a mutual agreement was reached on the need to begin work on establishing a strategic partnership between the two countries. He believes that the inviolability of international borders and uninterrupted communication between Armenia and Iran are of vital importance for the two countries. N. Pashinyan stated that the joint declaration signed in Washington on August 8 this year and the initialing of the agreement "On the establishment of peace and interstate relations between the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan" are aimed at creating great prospects for the economic development of the entire region.
According to the Armenian Prime Minister, Armenia and Iran intend to increase the volume of bilateral trade first to 1 billion dollars, and then to 3 billion dollars per year. N. Pashinyan reported that an agreement has been reached on the construction of a second bridge on the border between Armenia and Iran.
