ABUJA, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) — Twenty-six people were rescued by local divers and volunteers, while scores of others remain missing after a passenger boat capsized in Nigeria's northern Sokoto state on the afternoon of Aug. 17, authorities said.

The National Emergency Management Agency of Nigeria, which is coordinating rescue efforts after the disaster in Goronyo Local Government Area, said in a statement on Monday that 16 more survivors had been found during ongoing searches.

The wooden boat, carrying at least 51 passengers as well as goods and motorcycles, was heading to the local market in Goronyo when the tragedy occurred.

The Sokoto regional office manager of the National Inland Waterways Authority, Muhammad Bala, cited the agency's preliminary investigation as blaming "wind and overload" for the incident. -0-
